Poetry Proms Competition 2011
A father and daughter hug against
the tethered lifeboat and the wind.
She twirls a toggle on his duffel coat
between her fingers,
a bracelet of sweets at her wrist.
He pre-emptively swaps a camera lens
in anticipation of Skuas
The sun breaks the celtic knot of clouds
and the Christmas lights flicker on the wave tops
between wake and Minack.
And look there, silencing the school party
rollercoasting between e-numbers and sick bags.
There!. A dividend for the Cornwall Wildlife Volunteer,
and his ancient mariner listeners.
There. For the refugees of slot machines and pukka pies below.
Brought to the surface by sunlight
A fanfare of harbour porpoises
Semi quavers between the surface lines
The father lowers his zoom, and turns to face
his own natural miracle

Winter is soundtracked
By the late night hiss of medium wave
Struggling through the dark oppressive nights
Carrying tidings of great joy
To the galloping tune of Sports Report.
The upward lift of away wins
Sending people out again
To face the cold with hope in their heart.
